  • • Benefits of Hiring Individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities

  • New England Village offers a customized solution to meet your business needs. Over the years, we have partnered with more than 100 local businesses to fulfill their long- and short-term staffing requirements. As one employer said, “I recommend hiring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it is good for your business.”

Here are just a few of the reasons employers benefit when they hire people with intellectual and developmental disabilities:

  • Capable…
  • Despite widespread misperceptions, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are capable of learning new skills and completing tasks. People with I/DD also have formidable skill sets that can contribute greatly to the success of a business. If needed, there are many resources available including supported employment services that assist employees with on-the-job training and workplace modifications at no cost to the employer.

  • Hard Working…
  • On-time, dedicated, productive and loyal are just a few of the adjectives employers use to describe their employees with I/DD. Employees with I/DD oftentimes model characteristics that employers desire for their entire workforce. When asked, employees with I/DD will often fill in for co-workers who have missed their shifts.

  • Reliable…
  • A recent study conducted by the University of Massachusetts determined that 62 percent of adults with I/DD who were employed have been in their job for more than three years. This low turnover and high employee retention rate make people with I/DD ideal job candidates. Some of the employees supported by New England Village have been in their jobs for over 20 years! Employees with disabilities have lower rates of absenteeism; reports of perfect attendance are not uncommon.

  • Good For Business…
  • Hiring people with I/DD is a visible demonstration of a business’ commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Workplace diversity also creates a positive culture for employees and customers. With nearly 5 million people living with an intellectual disability in our country, chances are your next customer knows someone with an I/DD and will appreciate your hiring practices. Employees with disabilities can relate better to customers with disabilities, who represent $1 trillion in annual aggregate consumer spending.

  • Attitude…
  • Employees with I/DD demonstrate pride in their job by coming to work with a positive can-do attitude. Many businesses report that employing people with disabilities creates a positive corporate culture by increasing the morale and productivity of every employee.

“We found that the individual’s work attitude has a highly positive impact on the job culture. Often these employees excel in jobs with traditionally high turnover rates, resulting in significantly reduced hiring and training costs for the employer. They take great pride in working and succeeding.”
