Dental Health and Oral Hygiene Presentation
On Monday, March 26th, the Day Enrichment Program participants from Pathways 2 were treated to a presentation on dental health and oral hygiene. Karen Christofi and Darlene Chicoine, dental hygiene students at Bristol Community College in Fall River, talked about the connection between one’s overall health and their oral health. Ideas for healthy snacks were discussed and participants were shocked to learn that 11 tablespoons of sugar are in a regular bottle of soda. Using visual aids, charts and a variety of toothbrushes, participants were quizzed on how many times they should brush and floss each day, how much toothpaste to use and what kind of bristles are best (small amount of toothpaste and soft bristles). Everyone had a chance to brush Dinah the Dinosaur’s teeth in a gentle circular motion and at the end each participant received a goodie bag with floss, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Karen and Darlene not only fulfilled a community dental health requirement as part of their schooling, but also provided valuable dental health education to all of the Enrichment participants.
