Living Center Arts
One of our goals at the Village is to focus
on each
person’s abilities. Weekly Living Center Art classes, which began in 1996,
continue today in facilitating this goal - residents demonstrate their
creative abilities and explore self-expression through a variety of
media and subject matter. Over the years, the artists’ works have
been exhibited throughout the South Shore and Boston at museums,
libraries, private residences, local offices, businesses and schools.
The artists have developed a line of note cards, art reproductions
(cards and posters), handmade paper greeting cards, sculpted jewelry, T-shirts, tote bags,
hand painted silk scarves and a
calendar. Proceeds from the sale of these
items go directly to fund the Living Center Arts at New England Village.

Art Philosophy
We strive to
identify the intentions of the artists and provide the materials and
instruction necessary for achieving their goals. Artists at New
England Village are encouraged to express themselves through a variety
of visual media: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture,
weaving, sewing, and assemblage. The artists explore traditional
principles of basic design and the fine arts, as well as contemporary
concepts and media. The supportive environment of the classes provides
artists with therapeutic and social benefits, feelings of pride,
satisfaction, and self-worth. Within each person lies a glimmer of
greatness and through the freedom to explore the creative self, each artist’s method of
expression becomes his or her own distinctive signature.

Adult
Education Art Courses
The
creative arts are a major focus of New England Village’s Adult
Education Program. Art
classes, which are offered most quarters, provide Village residents and
individuals from the community opportunities to express themselves
creatively, to learn new artistic skills and to socialize with others
who share their interests. Art
classes run for a scheduled number of weeks and are generally organized
around specific projects, which teach new techniques or introduce a new
medium.
Registration
for all Adult Education Courses is required and a nominal fee may be
charged. Click here
to view our newest course brochure and to see if we are currently
offering art courses and accepting new applicants. Courses are taught at various aptitude levels so please
review the level description assigned to your course of interest. Top
NEVIS
Art Enrichment Program
“All
work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” is a saying that New
England Village Industrial Services (NEVIS) has taken to heart.
NEVIS provides a variety of work opportunities for many Village
residents and individuals with developmental disabilities from
surrounding communities. Recently,
however, they have added enrichment program activities to the week for
those individuals who may not be interested in working the full week
through or who may need alternative forms of stimulation that are
perhaps more creative and challenging to the imagination.
NEVIS’ art
enrichment program provides this challenge to those individuals who
want to take a break from their work week and pursue their interest in
the arts. Through the art
enrichment program, participants are lead through new projects each
week that build on what they learned the previous week.
Individual and group projects are created through the use of
watercolors, colored paper collages, oils and pastels and many other
mediums. For art program
participants it is a time to uncover hidden talents and learn new
skills, but most importantly it is time for relaxation, creativity and
fun.
