On the Road Again

The ever popular Day Enrichment Program Coast to Coast class recently “hiked” off to the Nevada desert in search of that beautiful bluish-green gemstone known as turquoise. Turquoise is typically found in the American Southwestern states: Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.  In actuality, the turquoise nuggets the Coast to Coast participants found were really hand made (believe it or not) from cut up raw potatoes. Once the potatoes were cut into small pieces and strung onto wire, they were left to air dry for several weeks. When the potatoes are dried they turn a brownish color and are “rock” hard. To create a realistic nugget the “rock hounds” painted the potatoes shades of blue, green and black to create the incredibly real looking turquoise. Once dry, the participants strung the turquoise nuggets along with black and gold beads in various patterns.  Beautiful!
