Coast to Coast "trip" to California

Coast to Coast participants “traveled” to California and viewed a slide presentation by Gary Talbot and Amy Saschuk; a 1970’s trip photo proved that gasoline really was once 55¢ per gallon!  The slide show presentation included a tour of the beautiful and elaborately sculpted and gold gilded paintings at the Hurst Castle in California.

During the second portion of the Coast to Coast activity, participants learned about different types of bridge construction; girder/beam, arch, suspension and truss bridges were discussed in particular. Participants then worked collaboratively to build a truss bridge from toothpicks and marshmallows. Each of the bridges constructed, whether out of paper or wood/mallow, were tested for their superior strength using pennies to represent vehicular weight. The truss bridge we built was able to withstand the weight of 13 pennies. Unfortunately, we had to wait a week for the marshmallows to harden to prove its weight for supporting the heaviest art book in the room!!!
