Portrait Artist Elizabeth Pothier

Artist-in-Residence Program

(Page 1)

Elizabeth Pothier, a local portrait illustrator and graphic designer, visited the Day Enrichment art program in February. The remarkable intent of Elizabeth’s work is that she focuses on female human portraits, primarily using candid photographs as reference.  Elizabeth explained that she looks for facial expressions in photographs or magazines which are rich in emotion and then draws them in detail. Elizabeth demonstrated how she begins with a pencil or graphite stick, then explained if these tools seem too rigid for the mood she is trying to create, she will use brush and ink. Elizabeth demonstrated all her tools and techniques, and then had the participants try out the tools for themselves.

As a follow-up to Elizabeth’s visit, Melanie had the groups draw portraits using the traditional grid system approach which places the facial features in correct placement and proportion. During another follow-up session, Melanie demonstrated how traditional Asian ink is made: a charcoal ink stick is ground on a special stone, then water is added to make the powder into ink. Participants had an opportunity to try this process and then used traditional Japanese Sumi brushes and bamboo reed pens to draw with.
